The 2016 Victorian Open Veteran Championships  was certainly a day to remember for Marilyn Knight. Qualifying with two solid wins in the round robin (7,1,4) and (13,8,8), Marilyn made it through to the knockout stage of the Over 60 Women’s Singles. Marilyn (pre-tournament rating 873 +- 36) then went on to defeat number three seed Quing Yang (1190+-56) in 5 sets, with amazing mental strength to come back from an 11/2 loss in the fourth set winning 11/8 in the fifth (-6, 6,14,-2,8).

Not content with the win of Marilyn’s Veteran’s competition career, Marilyn then went on to top that and beat number two seed Jean Pearce (1193+-41) … more than 320 rating points higher!!!! and make the grand final. Marilyn fought hard but despite her amazing quarter and semi final wins, the talented Roma Chambers and 583 rating points proved too big a hurdle (rated 1456+-42) with Marilyn taking out the runners up prize in the category.  Amazing play Marilyn, congratulations! I think it won’t be long before even Roma may be within your grasp.

Below are Marilyn’s results for the day:

Marilyn results

Phabulous Pham

Sy Pham (968+-34) also had an excellent tournament (notably beating the lovely Marilyn in 5 sets (7,-8,-9,11,8) … how dare you Sy!) making the finals of Division 4. Sy appeared to have Geoff Chandler (who started the tournament rated 807±435 and finished the tournament rated 1179±120) under control winning the first two sets 11/7 and 11/1 but eventually went down in a close fought fifth set 12/10. Congratulations Sy.

Satoko Wada

Satoko Wada (1096+-65) also performed well at the Open qualifying for the knockout stage of both the Over 40 Women’s Singles and Over 50 Women’s Singles. Satoko’s win of the day was over Aviva Brindley (1303+-33), more than 200 rating points higher, taking the match 3/1 (5, 8,−5, 8).

Brian does it again

Brian Berry performed amazingly again at the Open. A superstar and Saturday coach here at the club. Here are his results:

  • Winner Over 60 Men’s Singles
  • Winner Over 60 Men’s Doubles (with Lawrence Lim)
  • Winner Over 50 Mixed Doubles (with Roma Chambers)
  • Runner Up Over 50 Men’s Singles
  • Runner Up Division 1 Singles

An amazing day for the quiet achiever.

And lastly, yours truly (John Griffiths) won my first non-Coburg event taking out the Division 3.

Sorry to any Coburg player who performed well in the tournament who I may have missed, there were 145 entrants so I may have missed someone and I don’t know everyone at the club …. yet.
